Jurors in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy notified the judge on Tuesday that they are unable to reach a unanimous decision on whether to convict the Massachusetts woman for killing her three young children at her home in 2023, a tragedy her attorney contends occurred while she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Jury unable to reach verdict after days of deliberations
Judge William Sullivan in Plymouth, Massachusetts, after receiving the jury’s note, instructed jurors to continue their deliberations, which are now into their fourth day in a trial that began nearly six weeks ago. The panel sent a brief note to the courtroom, stating that after many hours of deliberation, they are unable to come to a unanimous decision, according to Sullivan.
“After many hours of deliberation, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision,” the jury said in the note, according to Sullivan.
The judge emphasized that it had been a long trial with over 80 witnesses and more than 300 exhibits. Because of that, he asked the panel to go back out and continue their discussions at this time, keeping in mind all of the instructions he gave them earlier.
“Because of that, I’m going to ask you to go back out, keeping in mind all of the instructions that I gave you, to go out and to continue your deliberations at this time,” he said.

Defense argues postpartum psychosis
No one disputed that Clancy, 36, strangled her three children to death in January 2023 with exercise bands in the basement of her home in the Boston suburb of Duxbury. She then cut herself with a knife and jumped from a second-story window in a failed attempt to end her own life that left her paralyzed.
Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, throughout the trial sought to convince jurors that she should be found not guilty by reason of insanity, arguing that she was a loving mother who had been in the midst of a psychotic episode when she killed Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and 8-month-old Callan on January 24, 2023.
This specific defense strategy places the legal system at a difficult intersection with medical science. When a defendant is found not guilty by reason of insanity, the outcome is rarely a simple acquittal; instead, it typically results in a commitment to a mental health facility for an indeterminate period.
