Meta plans to open an office in the Philippines to improve coordination with authorities on threats and harmful content, according to National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag. The social media giant’s move follows a recent meeting in Singapore between government officials and Meta representatives.
The discussions centered on enhancing information and data sharing to tackle “nihilistic violence,” a term Matibag used to describe threats similar to incidents in Tacloban and Zamboanga. He said the Philippine delegation included members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the National Telecommunications Commission, alongside the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center.
“Well unang-una nagpapasalamat ako kay (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda at sa CICC (Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center) kay Usec Aboy Paraiso, na kasama namin ang NBI, members of the House of Representatives, and representatives from the Senate, at ang National Telecommunications Commission kung saan nagkaroon kami ng pagpupulong with Meta,” Matibag said.
Matibag noted that the NBI has been forwarding data from monitoring operations to Meta regarding potential threats. “As we speak now, meron na kaming binabato yung mga tuloy-tuloy na pumapasok sa monitoring namin na maaring banta yung paguulit sa nangyari sa Tacloban at tsaka sa Zamboanga,” he said.
While the exact timeline for the office’s opening was not detailed, Matibag said Meta officials have agreed to the facility’s establishment to facilitate faster communication. This would allow for quicker responses to requests to take down threatening or harmful posts.
“So we have resolve na magkakaroon sila office dito kung saan ang aming communication duon na papasok, yung mga kailangan natin itake down kaagad na mga postings and all, ay gagawin nila,” Matibag said.

Despite the progress, authorities remain vigilant. Matibag emphasized that cyberspace is not a safe haven for illegal activities.
“Ang message dito, hindi na puwede magtago yung mga gumagawa ng kalokohan sa cyberspace. Hindi na puwede magtago,” Matibag said.
Meta’s presence in the region has been a topic of discussion since the Singapore meeting. The planned office represents a step toward a more formalized operational relationship between the company and local law enforcement. The new facility is expected to streamline how requests for content removal are processed.
Matibag stated that the NBI continues to monitor incoming data streams for patterns that match the violence seen in Tacloban and Zamboanga. The agency has been sharing these alerts with Meta directly to ensure rapid action against harmful content. This collaboration is part of a broader effort to address the rising tide of online threats.
Local officials have stressed that the safety of the public is the primary goal of these new protocols. The establishment of the Meta office will provide a physical location for direct dialogue between the social media company and the National Bureau of Investigation. This proximity aims to eliminate delays in responding to urgent safety concerns.
