Michael Cohen settles lawsuit against Trump’s company over legal bills
Donald Trump’s company and his former longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, have settled a lawsuit over Cohen’s claims that he was unfairly stuck with big legal bills after getting entangled in investigations into the former president. Lawyers for the two sides disclosed the settlement during a video conference with the judge on Friday, three days before Cohen’s 2019 lawsuit was slated to go to trial in a state court in New York City. Details of the agreement were not made public. Yukon Supreme Court says lawyers must disclose use of AI
Yukon’s Supreme Court says lawyers in the territory have to inform the court when they use artificial intelligence to produce court documents or conduct legal research. The court issued those instructions last month, citing “legitimate concerns about the reliability and accuracy of information generated from the use of artificial intelligence” and specifically referring to Chatbot, or ChatGPT. Manitoba’s Court of King’s Bench released similar directions last month after two New York lawyers were sanctioned by a US court when they used ChatGPT to produce a legal briefing. The document contained fake quotes and referred to as non-existent case law. Thomas Slade, an Ottawa lawyer with Supreme Advocacy, said he was surprised Canadian courts were taking a ‘pre-emptive’ approach to potential AI threats.…
Iqaluit council pushes GN on intimate partner violence law

Kimberly SmithAn Iqaluit city councillor says a law that allows people to request information from the police about a person’s history of violence should be adopted in Nunavut. Count. Kimberly Smith put forward a motion to city council in May for the council to formally request the Government of Nunavut to implement Clare’s Law in the territory. The Council unanimously approved the motion and sent a letter to Justice Minister David Akeeagok on May 30. Clare’s Law is named after Clare Wood, a woman who was murdered in England in 2009 by her ex-partner, a man who police knew had multiple convictions for violence against women.…

The European Union’s parliament on Wednesday backed a major plan to protect nature and fight climate change in a cliffhanger vote that had the 27-nation bloc’s global green credentials at stake.After weeks of intense lobbying against the plan, the legislature still supported the general outlines of a European Commission bill in a razor-thin 324-312 vote with 12 abstentions. The plan is a key part of the EU’s vaunted European Green Deal that seeks to establish the world’s most ambitious climate and biodiversity targets and make the bloc the global point of reference on all climate issues.
