ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Francis was backed by the ceremonial head of the Anglican Communion and top Presbyterian minister in calling for gays to be welcomed by their churches as he again decreed laws that criminalize homosexuality as unjust. The three Christian leaders spoke on LGBTQ rights during an unprecedented joint airborne news conference Sunday while returning home from South Sudan, where they took part in a three-day ecumenical pilgrimage to try to nudge forward the young country’s peace process. They were asked about Francis’ recent comments to The Associated Press, in which he declared that laws that criminalize gay people were “unjust” and that “being homosexual is not a crime.”…

Taylor Owen is the Beaverbrook Chair in media, ethics and communications and the director of the Center for Media, Technology and Democracy at McGill University. Supriya Dwivedi is the director of policy and engagement at the Center for Media, Technology and Democracy. Ever since the passage of Bill C-18, the Online News Act, both the Canadian government and the companies it is seeking to regulate – Meta and Google – have backed themselves into respective corners. The government pushed forward with the controversial bill, hoping that Google and Meta would expand the deals they currently have with some Canadian publishers to a wider range of outlets.…
Former sex worker’s victory in small claims court sets precedent, lawyers say
A former sex worker in Nova Scotia has successfully sued a client in small claims court for non-payment of services. She and her advocates hope the decision will change the legal landscape for sex work in Canada. The case relates to an incident in January 2022 when Brogan, whom CBC News is only identifying by her first name because she is a survivor of human trafficking, spent an evening with a client. Afterward, the client refused to pay the agreed-upon fee. Brogan then turned to small claims court to recover the money — in what advocates believe is the first time such a case has come before the courts in Canada — and won a judgment that she was entitled to the unpaid amount, plus interest and costs.…

After weeks of negotiations, US President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have announced an “agreement in principle” to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a potentially catastrophic default. The agreement includes spending cuts demanded by Republicans, but it is short of the reductions in the sweeping legislation passed by the Republican-led House last month. To reduce spending, as Republicans had insisted, the package includes a two-year budget deal that would hold spending flat for 2024 and impose limits for 2025. That’s in exchange for raising the debt limit for two years, until after the next election. Earlier this evening, Speaker McCarthy and I reached a budget agreement in principle.…
