DHS Adds Two Entities, Eight Subsidiaries to UFLPA Entity List
On June 12, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on behalf of the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force (FLETF), published a Notice adding two entities and eight subsidiaries to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) Entity List, for allegedly working with the government of the People’s Republic of China’s Xinjiang Province to recruit, transport, transfer, harbor or receive forced labor or Uyghurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, or members of other persecuted groups out of Xinjiang. Maine and Iowa Enact Job-Specific Limitations on Noncompetites
The two states recently have enacted restrictions on noncompete agreements being used in certain professions. In Maine, on June 1, 2023, the Governor signed into law LD 688/HP 457, entitled “An Act to Protect Access to Veterinary Care by Prohibiting Noncompete Agreements.” The act amends Maine Revised Statute title 26, § 599-A, which already prohibits an employer from entering into a noncompete with an employee if the employee is earning wages at or below 400% of the federal poverty level. The new amendment expands the noncompete ban to licensed Maine veterinarians, with a carve out for those with an ownership interest in a practice.…

Cree leader fears Quebec’s new French-language law will complicate relief during natural disasters
With wildfires affecting every community in her nation, Grand Chief and Chairperson of the Cree Nation Mandy Gull-Masty said she hopes the Quebec government takes a look at how changes to the French-Language Charter will affect communication and logistics with the 11 communities spanning around 400,000 square kilometers of the Eeyou Istchee (Cree territory). “The French language is something that can contribute to additional communication issues,” Gull-Masty told CTV News. “We are an English-speaking nation for the majority — we are Cree language speakers, our colonial language is English — [and] there has to be accommodation.
