Trump sues Michael Cohen, a key witness in the NY criminal case, seeking $500 million

WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit in federal court Wednesday against his former lawyer Michael Cohen — who has emerged as a key witness in the criminal case against him — seeking more than $500 million in damages and alleging “breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, conversion, and breach of contract.” Cohen was the key witness to testify last month before a Manhattan grand jury, which then approved a 34-count indictment against Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing. The complaint accuses Cohen of violating his attorney-client relationship with Trump by publicly disclosing information about him and “spreading falsehoods about [Trump]likely to be embarrassing or detrimental, and partook in other misconduct in violation of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct.”…

Bill C-233, which was sponsored by Liberal MP Anju Dhillon, was introduced in February 2022. It was dubbed “Keira’s Law” after four-year-old Keira Kagan, who was found dead with her father at the bottom of a cliff outside of Toronto in 2020. Keira’s mother, Jennifer Kagan-Viater, said at a press conference on Wednesday morning that she tried to call attention to the danger her daughter’s father presented to their child well before their death. She said she went to court to seek protection for Keira from the violent and coercive behavior of her ex-husband Robin Brown.…

The relationship between Mayor Ron Gervais, the firm, and city solicitor Robert Sheppard has been under scrutiny after some residents raised questions about perceived and possible conflicts of interest in recent media coverage. Gervais has been an elected official on the council for more than a decade, and served as deputy mayor before becoming mayor last November. The city has been paying Sheppard & Gervais for legal services throughout that time.…

Judge, Fox attorney clash over TV hosts’ testimony in Dominion defamation case

An attorney representing Fox News against Dominion’s $1.6 billion defamation suit clashed Tuesday with the judge in the case over how some of the network’s biggest stars can be questioned on the witness stand once the trial gets underway next week. Dominion’s lawsuit accuses Fox News of knowingly pushing false conspiracy theories about the voting machine company in the wake of the 2020 election, in order to combat concerns over ratings and viewer retention. “The hosts are going to make the argument that they didn’t make the statements,” Fox attorney Dan Webb said during a pre-trial hearing in the case, offering a potential window into how some of Fox’s biggest stars may explain some of their broadcasts that Dominion has said were defamatory.…
