Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery, has gained the Critics’ Circle Visual Arts Award for 2023 for providers to the visible arts in recognition of the £41.3m resetting of the gallery, which re-opened in June. Blockbuster exhibitions returned, and the world’s top art festivals, together with the Venice Biennale and Documenta, did as well.
