For decades, researchers have relied on animals to test whether chemicals are toxic to humans. But science has developed alternatives, and a new Canadian law will require them to move in those directions. This week, Bill S-5 was passed by the Senate and was given a royal assent. It includes language that brings Canada closer to “modernized toxicity testing,” according to a Windsor researcher who helped shape the legislation. Charu Chandrasekera says laboratories of the future will be forced to turn to other methods to determine whether chemicals are safe — instead of using rats, mice and dogs.Windsor Morning7:42Animal TestingFor decades, researchers have relied on animals to test whether chemicals are toxic to humans.…

Woman guilty in ‘calculated’ murder of Toronto lawyer Scott Rosen
Toronto lawyer Scott Rosen was no stranger to heated litigation, representing business clients and acting as counsel in shareholders, real estate and commercial lease disputes for more than 25 years. And while the 52-year-old did not shy away from forceful advocacy, even his most contentious matters stayed courteous and civil. So when an assailant poured phosphoric acid on his head as he descended the stairs to an underground parking lot near his midtown Toronto office on March 28, 2018, Rosen figured it was a random attack by someone who was mentally ill. This, despite the fact the culprit resembled Anh Chiem, whom he was suing on behalf of her former son-in-law.…

It was not immediately clear what charges led to his arrest, but the records show he was being held on a federal prisoner for a felony.…

Employee retention and entitlements in a business sale/purchase
A sale or purchase of a business can involve complex issues relating to employees of the business. The consideration in this article is appropriate only for an asset sale, in contrast to a share or equity sale. The issues can be broadly put into three groups: Retention, Entitlements, and Compliance. Retention How important are the staff to the functioning of the business? Would the business be valuable without the current staff? Put another way, would the buyer purchase the business without the employees (or a particular key employee)? This is a critical issue, particularly in smaller businesses which may be reliant on the knowledge or performance of one or two key personnel.…

Whether checking in at the airport or checking out at the grocery store, it seems everywhere you turn these days, you find frustrated consumers.
