Up until the 14th century, Malang was part of an Indianized majority Hindu-Buddhist kingdom like most of Java. There are minorities of Protestants, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhists and Confucians. The racial makeup of the city is principally Javanese, with small percentages of Madurese, Chinese and Arab descent.
